Nine Centuries of Continuity
Haute Germaine is not simply an estate — it is a line of custodianship stretching back nearly a millennium. From medieval knights to modern financiers, each generation has safeguarded and enhanced this Provençal stronghold.
The Knights Templar and the Knights of Malta
The earliest recorded custodians were the religious orders of chivalry, who integrated the Saint-Germain lands into their regional commandery.
- Defensive role in protecting the valley.
- Agricultural base that established the estate’s enduring self-sufficiency.
The estate’s chapel stands as a quiet marker of this medieval chapter.
Nobility and Aristocratic Lineages
In the 15th century, Haute Germaine entered the orbit of the Lascaris de Ventimiglia, descended from Byzantine emperors and Counts of Ventimiglia.
- Integrated into the Seigneury of Dosfraires, tying the estate to Provençal nobility.
- Passed in 1696 through the Martiny de Châteauneuf family, who formalized the division into Haute and Basse Germaine — a structure that still defines the estate today.
Industry and Agriculture: The Bonnafons Dynasty
From 1804 to 1949, stewardship passed to the Bonnafons family of Grasse, renowned soap manufacturers and tanners.
- The estate was transformed into a productive agricultural domain, reinforcing its role as a land-based economic engine.
- This industrial wealth-meets-land dynamic mirrors the interests of many modern family offices.
20th Century Renaissance
In 1960, Belgian businessman Jean Spindler commissioned the celebrated architect André Svetchine — known for his work with Marc Chagall and the Rothschilds — to reimagine Haute Germaine.
- Svetchine infused the estate with authentic Provençal architecture, while modernizing its functions.
- Later, a Liechtenstein holding (Jeffrick Investment Establishment) and Sir Donald Albery, a British theatre impresario, safeguarded the estate in transitional decades.
The Sandberg and Lawrence Era
From 1987, Haute Germaine entered the stewardship of Lord Michael Sandberg, Executive Chairman of HSBC, alongside Lady Carmel Donally.
- Formalized under the SCI Haute Germaine structure, ensuring institutional clarity.
- Stewardship continued with their daughter, The Honourable Marion Sandberg, and Captain Robert Lawrence, who reunified Haute and Basse Germaine in 2018, returning the estate to its historic integrity.
A Continuum of Stewardship
Every chapter has added credibility and permanence:
- Medieval foundations of faith and defense.
- Noble and aristocratic prestige.
- Industrial wealth and agricultural productivity.
- Cultural renaissance under Svetchine.
- Financial stewardship under Sandberg and Lawrence.
For UHNW families and institutional investors alike, Haute Germaine represents more than an estate. It is an opportunity to step into a lineage where each custodian has both preserved and redefined its role.
